New app shows where you can find fuel in Hungary
In the last few weeks, many of us who tried to fill up our tanks faced the fact that numerous Hungarian petrol stations simply ran out of gas. The Hungarian energy giant MOL previously issued a statement that the reason behind the lack of imports was the government’s recently prolonged price cap. However, the price cap was abolished yesterday, despite that the shortage will remain with us for at least 4-6 weeks. But a newly launched app will help drivers navigate through the nationwide chaos. Search for benzinkut.info in Google to find the app. Below you can read the details.
Zsolt Hernádi, the CEO of Hungary’s oil and energy giant, MOL, and Gergely Gulyás, the prime minister’s chief of staff, held an extraordinary joint press conference yesterday announcing the end of the fuel price caps in Hungary. As a result, everybody has to pay the market price for fuel in Hungary from yesterday 11 pm.
MOL expressed several times that the fuel shortage of the previous weeks could only end if the import was restarted. However, that was not worth it while the price caps were in force. After the abolition of the measure, the market is supposed to recover, but this process will not happen from one day to the other. According to Mr Hernádi, normal supply is projected to return only by mid-January in Hungary.
Therefore, people created a new app to help drivers look for fuel stations where they can fill up their cars. The app shows every petrol station operating in Hungary. When you open the app, red marks indicate the lack of fuel, while yellow means a shortage of gasoline or diesel. Green stands for an adequate supply of both gasoline and diesel.

Unfortunately, the app is in Hungarian, and the developers did not mention the launch of an English version anytime soon. However, if you tap on a fuel station, you will see its name and location in the first line. Afterwards, you can read the time of the latest update (óra means hour, while nap means day). Below, the first line stands for gasoline, while the second is for diesel. ‘Kapható‘ means available.
The app runs as a social fuel station info database. That means that everyone can contribute by sharing their experience on the map by clicking on the “Adatok frissÃtése” (Update) button. Of course, the developers of the page do not take responsibility for the accuracy of the data, benzinkut.info says.
